Range Rover Autobiography

by Editor ISSUE 40 — MAY/JUN 2009

Wealth Creator hits the road in the latest offering from Britain's finest.

The Autobiography. It’s certainly a catchy name for a car. It speaks of a seriously elegant, limited-edition number made with lots of leather and luxurious detailing; something that offers insights, wisdom, and a fulfilling experience. Well, the Range Rover Autobiography offers
all that and a lot more besides. It’s a story waiting to be told.

I took the Autobiography down to the Mornington Peninsula for the weekend with
my family to see if I could learn anything from this much-awaited vehicle. We loaded up some friends and enough luggage for the duration, and still had plenty of room for our greyhound Dougal in the palatial 994-litre boot space. In fact, we could have put a whole library in there, complete with fireplace and leather armchair.

Leather is a large part of the interior design in the Autobiography. There is leather everywhere – covering the doors and dashboard (both with hand stitching), the leather seats and even the mats on the floor. Various woods have also been integrated into the design, which add to the feel of a highly distinguished interior.

Road going on the freeway is a breeze with the Autobiography, with brilliant visibility.

To test out its four-wheel drive capability we took the car over some rough sand tracks. In four-wheel-drive mode the Vogue’s Terrain Response™ system offers five settings, adjusted manually by the driver via a dial on the centre console. Loose sand, inclines and deep ruts were a breeze and we were able to sit back and let the Range Rover do all the work.  We also had a chance to try out another of the Autobiography’s gadgets – Venture Cam, a portable video camera that enables you to view some of your more exciting moments like creek crossings and terrain descents.

All in all, the Autobiography is an impressively engineered dream to drive, but at $200,380 or $212,700 for the super-charged V8 petrol model it’s no paperback.  But if you collect limited edition, leather bound autobiographies then this is definitely for you.
