“I found some of those early challenges so frustrating and so disappointing, but you know, you just have to get on with it.” - Layne Beachley
She is a world champion surfer, dates an international rock star and runs a company going global. Mark Quigley speaks to Layne Beachley about making waves in business. When Layne Beachley - the world’s best ever female surfer - agreed to an interview, I assumed there would be a couple of assistants in the room, BlackBerrys in hand, guarding our discussion and before long asking me to “wrap it up’”.
Instead, I’m greeted by a relaxed-looking Beachley, alone at the front door of her modest home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. No assistants, no BlackBerrys and no pretence. Sitting down at her dining room table, she seems every bit the stereotypical laid-back surfer. In fact, I notice she doesn’t even have all of her world title trophies on display.
“Yeah, a couple of them are in the garage I think,” says a jeans and singlet-wearing Beachley. “It’s quite funny actually because I was coming home one day with Kirk (Pengilly, her INXS guitarist boyfriend) one day and he saw one of the trophies lying in the garage. He just laughed and shook his head. He said it was like him leaving a Grammy in his garage.”
But don’t be fooled. Underneath that ultra-chilled persona lies 100 per cent pure, gritty determination. When the 34-year-old starts telling you what it takes to succeed - in business and in life - the carefree surfer quickly disappears.
“I wasn’t born a world champion,” she says. “It doesn’t matter if its surfing or business, it takes determination, mental strength and a commitment to never give up”.
