James Masini - New Recruit

James MasiniFrom university student to general manager, James Masini is breaking new ground in the well-trodden internet space.  When James Masini left university, he expected to find a job right away. But the reality was that most of the positions advertised in the newspapers and online were for those already with years of on-the-job experience. It was very difficult to find positions solely for fresh graduates or young, inexperienced workers.

After spending hours trawling through internet sites like Seek.com.au, and becoming increasingly frustrated, Masini realised there was a distinct gap in the market for a job search website dedicated to the Australian youth market.

After asking other university students and friends, he realised that many other young people were having the same difficulties - particularly when it came to finding casual or part-time work. So Masini, a budding entrepreneur who was studying Business Management Entrepreneurship at RMIT University in Melbourne, decided to set up a company that provided just this. He immediately took his idea to some high-profile businesspeople - including Boost Juice founders Geoff and Janine Allis, retailing and property tsar Mark Beson - the force behind the Sussan Group - and Peter Jordan, a partner of growth solutions at Deloitte.
“They loved the idea and agreed to provide the capital to launch Hippo,” says Masini. “It is really amazing having people like Janine and Mark Beson on board. They are investors in the business but they have also, as mentors, given me personally a huge amount of help and support.”
