Companies that are seeking to boost their productivity by solely offering gym memberships to their employees may be wasting their money, a leading Sydney fitness educator has said. Fiona Cosgrove, managing director of Wellness Coaching Australia, has found that in order to motivate staff and increase productivity, companies need to utilise coaching-based fitness and health programs.
“Many businesses choose the easy option of subsidising gym memberships or providing in-house gyms for staff. On a practical level, use of such facilities is often low. Many employees aren’t ready for, or suited to, those methods. What they really need is the support of a good coach,” said Cosgrove.
Coaching-based programs are big news in the United States, and are just recently emerging in Australia and attracting the interest of companies seeking to motivate and get the most from their staff.
“Unlike traditional personal trainers and gym programs, wellness coaching uses the principles of goal-setting and behavioural change in areas such as nutrition, fitness, weight control and stress management,” said Cosgrove.
“A wellness coach helps people define their vision around their health and fitness, develop and facilitate a program, and coach them through it, working on breaking those ingrained behaviours and habits that hold them back,” she added.
