A week of wealth
The answers will inevitably come, but its interesting to hear the questions being asked at the Future Summit 2010
Some of the brightest minds in Australia were gathered in Melbourne this week to attend the annual Future Summit 2010.
For those unfamiliar with the summit its mantra is simple: take the big issues of the day, find experts with a range of opinions and throw them all in together. Now discuss.
While the perennial issues of economic stability and environmental sustainability were key to the event’s success, it was also interesting to sit in on sessions on topics such as urban planning and appropriate population levels. It was reassuring to know that healthy debate is taking place on not only what we want the future of Australia to look like, but what sort of people we will be when it is realised.
Lunch was spent discussing the Indian market and the incredible opportunities available there when one of the delegates made an admission.
“I love this event, it asks all the big questions,” he confided. “It just seems like it never comes up with any answers.”
Ultimately deciding the future of the country was certainly not within the ambit of the summit – if it was then there would have probably been even more fiery debate – but it was refreshing to see the captains of industry not only take time out to consider their influence on wider society, but also taking responsibility for the future and their role within it.
Sure, there may not be a lot of answers yet, but at least the questions are being asked.
