Andrew Barlow helped sell his internet firm Hitwise for $240m and now he’s carving out a new career in venture capital. Joanne McCulloch reports. Andrew Barlow is finding it hard to wipe the smile off his face. The entrepreneur recently sold his company Hitwise for $240m in cash, then pocketed multi-millions for his second start-up, Max Super. Now he is launching a new venture capital fund that aims to boost its assets under management from $30m to $100m by the year-end.
“Yep, I feel good,” Barlow says with a laugh. “Hitwise has been seven to eight years in the making. It’s great to see results on paper, but to actually get something done and get something tangible is a great reward. It’s really more a sense of relief because I moved on from Hitwise as an executive some years ago and now I’m frantic with other things.”
These other things include working as chief executive of Max Super - the innovative superannuation company he set up with his brother Dave, a former Merrill Lynch analyst. The firm is specifically targeted at the younger end of the market and aims to demystify the subject of retirement. Virgin-esque in its approach, its marketing copy is funky and up-beat - something that Barlow says differentiates it from other market leaders.
“We established a fresh new brand that is less institutional than mainstream brands,” he says. “We offer a really good product online and our goal is to engage people with super so they can get their rewards.”
