Guy Venables - Look and Learn

Success means different things to different people. For some it’s about the dollar, for others it’s about finding a successful niche. For Guy Venables it was about seizing an opportunity in the photography industry and turning it in to a $7.5 million company and an Australian export success story. His business also founded an industry that would change the way photographers work and how clients commission professional photographic images in Aus/NZ/Asia.

Guy Venables was born in the UK in 1958 and was raised in a country town. He had a ‘traditional’ English education at the local boys’ grammar school where the head master’s cane was an ever-present consequence for those who stepped out of line. “It really was quite Dickensian,” says Venables. He never received the cane, but feels that his schooling and a hard-working single mother who raised him and his sister were where the discipline, hard work ethic and drive came from.

At college he studied Business and French and went on to his first desk job in London. His salary was only enough to cover his rent and overdraft. It was at that point that he decided some things had to change.

Off to the colonies
In 1986 Venables migrated to Australia and took a job as an account director for a small advertising agency, working hard on new business development. “I’m the type of person who is prepared to work hard because I learned from an early age that nothing in life comes easy,” says Venables. Applying the same work ethic in Australia that got him nowhere in the UK, life began to change. “This is truly a country where you can make something of your life,” he says. “It’s important to surround yourself with mentors, successful people and those who inspire you.”
