Before a profit can be made on ticket sales, theatre relies upon substantial investors. The difficulty faced by those seeking investors for theatre is that, unlike films and charities, no tax incentive exists.

 

Louise Withers: Business is a Stage

Louise WithersLouise Withers’ passion for the theatre has continued throughout her career, from her time as a performer to her current position as Director of her own company. WCM talks to Louise about her experience in the business of entertainment.

At the age of 14, Louise’s involvement in amateur theatre fostered a desire to pursue a career in entertainment. Her high ambitions were tempered by her parents’ advice to continue studying, so she completed a Bachelor of Education and begun her working life as a secondary school teacher of music. Her career as a professional performer began in 1985 with a touring production of Footrot Flats: The Musical. When she reflects upon this time in her life, she sees a connection to her current position as an entrepreneur: “when you’re a performer, you’re in your own business, you are the product.” Similar to any business, a performer needs to recognise the importance of self-promotion: “you have to market yourself, you have to put yourself out there.”
